Ancient French fort and settlement on Old Fort Bay, (Baie du Vieux Fort), north shore, at western entrance Strait Belle Isle. It is called the "ancient harbour of Brest". Founded 1504. Frequented by Bretons 1500. Visited by Cartier 1534. Appears on a Portugese map of 1550 and on Desbien's 1546 (No. 74). Was in the original grant to Courtemanche 1630. Shown also on Molyneux map 1598 (No. 75).
