Old French post Forteau Bay, Strait of Belle Isle. Fort built 1710. It marked the eastern limit of the grant to Courtemanche 1630. Before 1630 the Basques had maintained there an establishment for whale fishery but were driven away by the Esquimaux. In 1716 the post was plundered by the Esquimaux. In 1748 the concession was granted for 9 years. The North West Co. acquired a lease of the post in 1788. Shown on Rinfret map of St. Lawrence (No. 67) and Low's map Labrador peninsula (No. 61). Does not appear to have been occupied by the Hudson's Bay Co.
