Originally built by North West Co. on the west bank of Athabaska river, opposite mouth of Clearwater river, in 1790, and named Fort of the Forks. The Hudson's Bay Co. took over this fort in 1821 and about 1875 rebuilt on site of the old fort and name was then changed to Fort McMurray. It appears on their 1869 list as Fort of the Forks.
