Fort erected by U. S. Government in 1814 at Port Huron at head of St. Clair river outlet of lake Huron. Port Huron is the site of old Fort St. Joseph built by Dulhut in 1686 not far from the site of Fort Gratiot. Fort St. Joseph was soon abandoned and is so marked on la Hontan map 1690.
